Why did Steinbeck have Crooks talk to Lennie about Loneliness?

In part 4 of OMAM, Crooks talks to Lennie about his past life. Crooks explains how he was treated and what happened in his past life to Lennie, although "[He] struggles to understand" (71). Crooks has been separated by segregation laws all his life and explains to Lennie sometimes someone is not there to comfort you. Lennie doesn't comprehend what Crooks is saying because George has always comforted him. Steinbeck chooses to have this conversation with Lennie because he only understands concrete statements and when he is faced with a if, then statement he doesn't know what to do.
